About
Yanitza Carmona y Correa (all pronouns) is a bilingual trauma therapist at the Chicago Torture Justice Center, where they integrate traditional and Western healing practices. Grounded in personal experiences with family separation due to incarceration and immigration detention, Yanitza’s work bridges clinical practice and advocacy.
They consider UIC home, as they double majored in Latin American and Latino Studies and Applied Psychology. They subsequently returned to obtain their master's in social work.
They are currently a third year PhD student in Criminology, Law, and Justice. They are currently an ACCESS Fellow. Their research interests are rematriation/decolonization, abolition, and carceral violence. They would like to focusing on the impacts of carceral violence and the role of ancestral wisdom in healing and resistance.
