About
Amanda’s academic background centers on the study of South American dictatorships from the 1960s through the 1980s, with a focus on how art and film function as tools for recovery and remembrance, preserving the memory of those who were disappeared or lost under authoritarian regimes. At the University of Illinois Chicago, she continues to develop this scholarship through her concentration in Latin American and Latino Studies.
For her dissertation research, Amanda examines higher education within prison and jail settings. Her work explores the possibilities and tensions of providing educational opportunities within carceral institutions. Alongside her research, Amanda has been actively involved in the UIC Prison Education Project, serving in multiple roles including teaching assistant, program co-coordinator, and instructor for her own course. Through this work, she has participated in programs in both the men’s and women’s divisions at the Cook County Jail.
