My research interests are in the areas of  sexual assault, online sex crimes committed against children, prisons, community corrections, reentry, sociolinguistics, epidemiology of violence, violence in against and among employees in the quick service restaurant industry.

I have 12 years of teaching experience at the University level to date. I passionately believe in engaging my students in active learning processes including a wide variety of creative projects and activities.

Fun fact: When she isn't teaching, writing, cooking, playing with animals, or researching, Melanie has been a core background actor on NBC's Chicago Med for 5 seasons, since the show began filming in 2015 as "Med Tech Mel". She also appears in crossover episodes with NBC's Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. as well as has worked on a number of other filming projects with other networks.
